School Committee Goals 2023-2024

Approved November 29, 2023

1. Budget - Oversee a participatory budget development process that results in a finalized budget by March 31, 2024.  Ensure that lines of responsibility and authority between the Budget Subcommittee, School Committee, and District Administration are clear and agreed upon.  School Committee members come prepared to budget conversations having reviewed all appropriate material. 2. Policy – Determine priority policies to be reviewed, updated, and approved in the current cycle. Collaborate with District Administration and Legal Counsel. The School Committee will approve updated policies as necessary. 3. Negotiations – Together with SPS administration, establish and maintain productive working relationships with all unions and with union leadership.  Work to successor agreement on all Union contracts which are scheduled for negotiations and expire on June 30, 2024.  4. Superintendent Evaluation – Collaborate with Dr. Botelho to ensure a successful third year evaluation cycle. Develop mutually agreed to goals that are aligned with the District Plan as well as the School Improvement Plans and that adhere to the schedule agreed upon between Dr. Botelho and the School Committee.  5. Equity & Inclusivity – Focus on equity, inclusivity, justice, and belonging in all aspects of our work. Participate in semi-annual DEI training and share our take-aways with the community. Consider the impact that SC decisions have on equity, inclusivity, justice, and belonging.  Support the work of the new DEI Director,  District Administration and Staff as they work to advance these issues and ensure we are communicating our commitment to that work to the community at large.  Actively participate in DEI related District events, outreach, etc.  Based on qualitative and quantitative data supplied by the District, School Committee members will ensure they understand the barriers of access,  including access to advanced and alternative coursework, for students at all levels.  In collaboration with District Administration, determine where our efforts on policy and budget can help to remove those barriers for our students.  6. District Plan - The School Committee will review and approve the new District Plan and once approved ensure that we use the vision and goals of the plan to guide the key aspects of our work with budget and policy priorities. Request that the Superintendent provides regular updates with data (qualitative, quantitative and anecdotal) on progress against the District Plan, in particular, progress related to learning and teaching and our student’s academic and social emotional status. 7. Elementary Master Plan - School Committee will review and understand the plans to meet the short and long term space and design needs of the Elementary Schools.  They will work with the Administration to advocate and secure the financial requirements necessary to support those needs.  8. Community Updates on Data, Progress, Performance - School Committee will more regularly and actively agenda, review and understand the critical metrics related to District performance, specifically related to the Long Term District Plan and Annual School Improvement Plans.  This will include (but not be limited to) academic performance, curriculum reviews, student achievement gaps. **

School Committee Correspondence

The School Committee welcomes correspondence from all members of the Sharon Community. The School Committee makes every effort to respond to all correspondence. Letters received by 9:00 AM the day of a School Committee meeting will also be summarized at that meeting. Please note that all correspondence sent to the School Committee is covered by Open Meeting Law requirements and, as such, is considered a public record document.

Community Input at School Committee Meetings

The School Committee recognizes the importance of providing a forum for community input.

As per School Committee policy BEDHA, the Committee "shall set aside thirty minutes prior to the first scheduled meeting each month as an Open Forum period to receive community input regarding the operations of the Sharon Public Schools." In addition, "where practical, community participation in the discussion of specific agenda items will be accommodated during any regular School Committee meeting. The Chair may set specific time constraints on such comments when necessary".

Open Forums are not intended to replace procedures which are already established to address and resolve specific building or child-related issues; parents and community members are reminded to first follow these established procedures (through a teacher, building adminstrator, and/or subsequently the Superindendent or his/her designee).
